I found a lump on my nipple

by Dr. Sarah Brewer

question
I'm 18 and I've found a lump on my nipple. It has been there for about three months. I have had smaller lumps before and they have just gone away. This is slightly noticeable - about the size of a pea. My aunt, grandma and granddad all died from cancer. When I put pressure on the lump it is white with a black spot in the middle. Do you think I have cancer?

answer
A number of different lumps can form around the nipple - including Montgomery's tubercles, which are a modified type of sweat gland designed to secrete substances that help a baby latch on to the nipple. Sebaceous cysts (black heads) and blocked skin glands (white heads) may also form in this area. It is highly unlikely that you have cancer but it is important to see your GP or practice nurse to help put your mind at rest.
