Lump on head

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I recently found a lump at the back of my head, just above the nape. It is solid - about the size of a peanut - and not painful. I haven't bumped my head at all - do you have any idea what it may be?

answer
The most likely cause of a lump like this is a sebaceous cyst (sometimes also known as a wen), which is quite common on the scalp. However, you will need to have the lump examined by your GP for a definite diagnosis.
