Sharp, shooting pain in breast

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
For the past two weeks, every time I get up, I have a sharp, shooting, mild(ish) pain in my right breast. It feels kind of 'hot' - as if there's a lot of blood rushing into a certain area. I've checked both my breasts and there's no outward sign of anything different. I've never had lumpy breasts and don't have any lumps now either. I'm very puzzled as the problem isn't going away.

answer

It's possible that you have pulled a muscle or ligament in the chest wall, or have a temporary inflammation at the end of certain ribs (relatively common) but it is impossible to say until you've been checked by your GP.

All recurrent chest pain should be taken seriously, so do make an appointment to see your GP.
