Fingertips turning blue

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
My fingertips (under my nails) keep turning blue for no apparent reason - it seems to be worse on my right hand. I was wondering if it was just poor circulation or if it could be something else?

answer

Blueness at the end of the fingers is a sign of poor oxygenation - possibly because of poor circulation, although this can also be linked with coldness. Sometimes the ends of the fingers can go blue, then white as a result of spasm of blood vessels in a condition known as Raynaud's.

It is important to see your GP to have your blood pressure and limb circulation checked, so that he can investigate any possible underlying causes.
