Will he get thrush too?

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I have thrush after taking two sets of antibiotics. Since then, my boyfriend and I have been using condoms to prevent him getting thrush as well. I've just taken Diflucan, so how long do we need to wait before we can have sex again without condoms?

answer
Diflucan usually kills candida fairly quickly, although it may take three or four days for all soreness and itching to resolve. You will probably be all right to make love within three or four days of treatment, but perhaps suggest your partner applies anti-fungal cream either before or after making love.

Male thrush is not usually too much of a problem and often settles down by washing with salt water twice a day and keeping the penis dry. A study amongst 43 men with mild balanitis showed that by washing the penis with water alone, almost all cases resolved. However, anti-fungal creams work quickly if symptoms are troublesome.
