With all of these treatments - lifestyle, medical and surgical - monitoring for treatment efficacy and watching for side-effects is critical. Monitoring can involve regular consultations with your doctor as well as blood, urine and other laboratory tests and X-rays.

Prognosis
In most cases, RA starts slowly. Only in about one in five cases does the condition develop rapidly. About one in five cases will only ever have mild symptoms. Most patients suffer intermittent flare-ups with cumulative joint damage, but one in twenty will have severe RA, which is progressive.
