Why doesn’t food give me energy?

by Dr Howard Lee

question
I have a problem with food. I crave it all the time. I have breakfast at half past seven/eight, and an hour later I'm hungry again. If I don't eat I feel very, very tired and get a headache that won’t go away. I get the shakes, feel weak and faint and I’m very pale. And that can sometimes be between breakfast and lunch!

I just can't figure out what to eat that will fill me up and leave me alert. Sometimes I get so hungry that I eat loads to compensate and then feel very full and tired. I'm 21, 5ft, 7.5 stone with a small build. I'd just like to know if I have a fast metabolism or something, and what I can do to help myself.

answer

You supplied your height and weight details that give a reading of 20.5062 for your body mass index (BMI), which is a more accurate way of estimating body size. This, when looked up in tables, indicates either a chronic protein energy malnutrition (17-20) or the lower end of a “desirable” weight (20-25). I would suspect that you are, in fact, burning off your body fat. Your reduced energy levels would also indicate this.

It may well be that you do have a metabolic change that could involve your thyroid gland (over-activity) or even a sugar problem with a diabetic tendency. It is important, then, to obtain your doctor’s opinion, and you will certainly need a minimum of simple blood tests to try and determine possible problems.
