How is peri-oral dermatitis treated?

by Dr Lesley Hickin

question
What is the treatment for peri-oral dermatitis?

answer
Peri-oral dermatitis is a form of acne affecting the skin surrounding the mouth, but there is always a clear area between the rash and the lips distinguishing it from eczema. The rash of peri-oral dermatitis is usually caused by using powerful steroid creams or ointments on the face. In the short term, these may clear eczema but in the longer term may cause the appearance of acne-like spots.

Treatment involves firstly stopping the use of the steroid, then taking a course of antibiotics, such as tetracycline or erythromycin, for several weeks.
