Whooshing noise in my ears

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I can hear my heart beating and the actual whooshing of the blood flow in my ears. This happens mostly when I'm lying in bed. It's very annoying and I've no idea why this has started. Do you?

answer
It's worth telling your doctor so you can have a few tests to check your blood pressure and cranial nerves, and to see if this sound sensation (tinnitus) can be heard by your doctor (using a stethoscope) or if it is only obvious to you. In some cases this form of tinnitus can be related to inner ear problems, and you may be referred to an ENT specialist for advice. Often, however, no obvious cause for this sensation are found.
