Alcohol, drugs and mental illness

continued from page 7
Withdrawal from opioids and barbiturates is best carried out gradually with the person concerned in a hospital. Withdrawal from stimulants is often undertaken by outpatient treatment. When someone who is drug-dependent cannot be persuaded to give up, doctors may prescribe drugs that have a similar effect but act more slowly and have less troublesome withdrawal problems. The period of controlled dependence also gives you an opportunity to change your lifestyle and gives more time for social support to become effective.
