Atkins - the side effects
continued from page 1
Constipation
Because Atkins is a low-roughage diet it can lead to constipation - bacteria in the large bowel need fibre to help bulk up motions. Eat your full allowance of vegetables and salad. Take a fibre supplement if, necessary, and drink plenty of water. A probiotic supplement containing live, friendly bacteria can help maintain healthy digestion during the diet. These are available from health food shops. Avoid probiotic drinks containing sugar, however - opt for capsules instead.
Cramps
As the weight starts coming off, you lose fluid and minerals, which can cause leg cramps. Take supplements containing potassium, magnesium and calcium, in addition to the recommended multivitamins.
As with any new diet programme, you should seek medical advice to see if Atkins is the diet plan for you before you start. Any unusual or adverse side effects should be reported to your GP.
