The 'withdrawal method; involves the male withdrawing from the female just before ejaculation. Some studies have reported no difference in failure rates between the withdrawal method and barrier methods such as the diaphragm. It should not be relied on if it's imperative that pregnancy is avoided.
Pros
- Costs nothing.
- No medical intervention necessary.
- Always available.
- No side-effects.
- Can be used with a spermicide to increase effectiveness.
Cons
- Withdrawal requires strong motivation and self-control.
- Timing is important.
- May make sex unsatisfying, especially for the male.
- Anxieties about possible pregnancy for the woman.
- Pre-ejaculation may contain sperm.
- Partial ejaculation sometimes occurs unnoticed before full male orgasm.
