Can intercourse cause urinary tract infections?

by Patti Britton

question
Dear Dr Patti
My doctor told me that I might be getting bladder infections due to my sex life. Is there anything I can do to stop getting urinary tract infections or bladder infections when I have sex?
B

answer
Dear B
This is a common complaint among women when certain factors are present, in particular the style of intercourse. Bladder and urinary tract infections are linked to the hard, pounding type of penetrative sex — most common in the man-on-top position. When a man keeps moving his penis inside a woman's vagina and his groin against her body in strong thrusting patterns, the result is often a slight-to-moderate pressure on the woman's urinary tract. This is a condition that a gynaecologist should readily pick up on as related to sexual behaviour. While the sensation of hard thrusting can feel good to both partners, unfortunately it can cause distress to your delicate inner workings.

Help your partner understand that his style of penetration may be causing you pain. Many women tell me that if they experience constantly painful results from too much or a specific kind of sexual activity, they become uninterested in sex altogether. A better approach is to change positions. Adding different positions to your sex life will create different results. The woman-on-top position might be the best one for eliminating that pounding sensation against your abdomen while allowing him to enter you deeply. Women generally find this position very pleasurable. Also, the side-to-side and doggy-style positions may lower the amount of pressure on your bladder and urinary tract.

If he resists changing positions, let him know that unless he is willing to change his patterns you will continue to have these symptoms. Make sure you tell him nicely that he is literally hurting you. By doing that, he is ruining his chances for more and better sexual encounters with you.
