Non-invasive treatment for endometriosis

by Dr Howard Lee

question
I suffer from endometriosis and I have had some surgery (one ovary and one fallopian tube removed). I need to be treated again but in a much less invasive way – do you have any suggestions?

answer
Sorry to learn that you have a problem with endometriosis – a most frustrating and worrying condition. There are two forms of treatment available, depending on the severity and location of the endometriosis. Surgery can be carried out to remove areas of endometriosis and/or parts of the reproductive organs, but this may depend on whether a woman wishes to conceive in the future.

Surgery may also help with infertility that is due to endometriosis. The most common form of treatment is, however, drug therapy. The drugs that can be prescribed are chosen according to the individual and their situation. If one drug is not well tolerated, as can sometimes be the case, another can be prescribed.

Various drugs decrease ovarian activity and so inhibit endometrial growth, and these are used when infertility is not a problem to be considered. Others are used to suppress ovulation but normal ovulatory cycles can return two months after treatment is stopped. They are therefore useful for women who wish to conceive after treatment. So, there are medical, non-invasive treatments available for endometriosis, and I do hope that you will be able to get your condition remedied.
