How long will it take to recover from a hysterectomy?
I'm on the waiting list for a hysterectomy. How long will I need to take off work afterwards?
The operation can be carried out in two ways, and this will have a bearing on how much time off you will require. The vaginal method means that the stomach muscles have not been cut, and therefore you do not have quite so many restrictions. The usual method of removal via the lower abdominal muscles will mean that you will have to allow time for these to heal properly.
If you have a sedentary, job then allow at least eight weeks. If you have a physically active job then allow yourself three months. Dont forget that even if you have waited a long time for the operation, and cant wait to get rid of it, you will probably have a post-operative depressive period. This is normal and observed in most women who have operations on their pelvic organs.
