Heavy periods could mean the beginning of menopause

by Dr Howard Lee

question
I am a 46-year-old woman and over the past year I have been experiencing heavier and heavier periods. Is this likely to be due to menopausal changes and should I just keep putting up with it? It is now beginning to affect my life for a couple of days each month, as I feel very insecure to go out anywhere because I need to visit the toilet to change at least every hour. Please advise.

answer
I’m sorry to learn that you have been having problems with heavy periods, and that these have been causing you concern and anxiety. It would certainly seem that your problems are cyclical and therefore connected with a change in hormones.

Menopausal changes can go on for a considerable time, but there are many successful treatments available for your problems and these can ‘set you free’ from the monthly disturbances. It is, of course, important that various simple investigations and examinations are carried out in order to determine that this is the particular situation in your case. You should be able to enjoy years of controlled ‘change of life’ before the natural processes take over.
