Gone off sex chat with Dr Sarah Brewer

continued from page 8
Does the menopause affect libido?
Q: What treatment would you recommend for a woman who has gone through menopause and has lost her sex drive?
cl-ijjay

A: First, check the low libido is not due to any medication you are taking (for example, blood pressure tables or anti-depressants) and that you are not consuming excess alcohol.

I normally recommend a multivitamin and mineral supplement designed for your age group (one labelled 50+), plus evening primrose oil (1-3g daily) and an isoflavone extract (for example, from soy, red clover or Japanese arrowroot).

Consider taking co-enzyme Q10 if you are lacking in energy. If you have adjusted to the menopause well, try pfaffia (also known as Brazilian ginseng). If you feel stressed and are adjusting to the menopause poorly, try Siberian ginseng. If you are having trouble with hot flushes, black cohosh can be effective. St John's wort is good for low moods (check for interactions if taking any other medications). A vaginal lubricant is also a good idea. If this approach has not helped within six weeks, you may wish to consult your GP.
