How do I get information on the Pill?

by Dr Howard Lee

question
I want to start using contraceptive pills for family planning purposes, but I’m not familiar with UK products and how to obtain them. Could you please give me some advice? In the past I have used Tryphasil, which is a popular contraceptive pill in South Africa. I stopped using it about two years ago (my gynaecologist prescribed it because I had some problems with my menstruation cycle.) I am 20 years of age.

answer
I am glad that you are thinking about the protection of the Pill and that you have had some former experience. There are two ways to go about a family planning interview: most general practitioners either run a clinic in their own surgery, supplying the Pill themselves, or they have a nurse-run clinic in the practice.

The other option is a Local Health Authority F.P.C. (family planning clinic), which is a ‘drop-in’ consultation. In all of the situations, you will normally have an interview and discussion, an examination for review of your health and advice on the type of Pill.
