Infertility – can I get treatment past 40?

by Dr Howard Lee

question
I am 41 and my husband is 49. We have three children already and have been trying for another baby for the last three years. Would my GP consider us for fertility treatment?

I feel embarrassed because so many people have no children and we have three beautiful boys already but we would really like another child.

My cycle is around thirty-four days and still regular.

answer

It does sound as if you have some ‘fertility’ problems. Fertility in females and, to a lesser extent in males, does fall as age rises. Have a look at our article How age affects fertility. There are also increased ‘risks’ and ‘disadvantages’ to pregnancy for an older woman and I’m sure that you have considered these.

Fertility treatments are usually for long-term fertility problems of a ‘primary’ nature and are controlled – there are financial involvements – by the Area Health Authority. To find out more look at our article IVF: An end to the postcode lottery. This would be a consideration in your case. I think it’s worth going to visit your GP to discuss this and see what the situation is in your area.
