Removal of one ovary need not affect fertility
I had a Caesarean eight weeks ago for my second child that revealed a dermoid cyst on my ovary. I have now been told I need an operation to remove the ovary and cyst. What will the operation involve and will it have any after effects (periods, children etc.)? Also, can I donate the eggs removed from me to other women?
I’m sorry that you have had an added problem following your caesarean. These dermoid cysts (germ cell tumours) can certainly be a problem – on occasions they can be removed without having to have the ovary removed as well – but it seems that yours is much too intimately involved with your ovary.
As long as you have a normally functioning remaining ovary, you will not have any apparent changes in ovulation, menstruation or hormone effects (the remaining ovary will take over everything that is needed). The ovary that will be surgically removed may not be a normal ovary any more, so it will not contain any useable eggs anyway. These would have to be matured, ripened and brought to the point of ovulation by your hormone cycle when the ovary is functioning normally.
