The Pill and Depo Provera

by Dr Howard Lee

question
I am 26 years old and I have a 4-year-old son. I am currently on the pill and have been for 4 months. Prior to this I was using the Depo Provera injection for 2 years. I now wish to try for another baby, but I am concerned about how Depo Provera may have affected my fertility. What is the normal length of time I can expect to wait before I could conceive?

answer
I assume that, after the use of Depo Provera, your periods returned before you started on the Pill? I also assume that, while on your current Pill, you are getting regular bleeds. If these features apply in your case, there should be no real affect on your fertility.

Usually, when wanting to have another baby, we suggest that you allow at least one period to occur ‘naturally’, after you’ve discontinued the pill. If, however, you do manage to get pregnant immediately, well, that’s great. It is said that it takes the ‘average’ couple about 9 months to conceive, which implies some people succeed within a month, and others may take at least 12 months.
