Chlamydia advice
Could an ex-partner have infected you with the sexually transmitted infection Chlamydia? Dr Shazia Maqzood has the answers
I have recently found out an ex of mine has tested positive for Chlamydia. We separated a couple of years ago and I have been with my new partner ever since. I have not noticed that there is anything wrong with me and neither has my partner.
How will I know if I have got Chlamydia? As I broke up with my ex a couple of years ago, do you think it is worth getting tested myself or do you think I will be OK?
Chlamydia is a very common sexually transmitted infection that now affects one in ten women. Chlamydia can be present for years without symptoms so I would advise you to take an easy test for reassurance.
You can get a quick diagnosis for Chlamydia by urine testing; there are now self-test kits available from local chemists. You can also visit your doctor or family planning clinic, who will be able to provide a test for you. If you do test positive for Chlamydia, a short course of antibiotics will help clear this up. In this case your partner would also need treatment.
Although there are mostly no symptoms for Chlamydia, vaginal discharge, lower tummy aches, and stinging while passing urine are strong indicators.
