How can I make our rental property a home?

We are moving into a rental property with our two small children a girl aged four and a boy aged two. I just wondered if there was anything you could suggest to help make it more of a 'home' while keeping it easy to return to a neutral state.

Home making in this case is all in the accessories - furniture, light shades, soft furnishings, pictures. The more you have the more it will feel like your home.
