Putting up a curtain track

Tools and Materials
a screwdriverFine-tooth hacksaw, craft knife or file, pencil, ruler, power drill with masonry drill bits, screwdriver, curtain track and fixings, wall plugs.

1. The length you need the curtain track or pole is the first decision to make. Unless you know the exact length required, it's safest to get something that is longer than you need, and then cut it using a hacksaw. Remove any burrs from the cut ends with a file or craft knife.

If the curtains are thick then the rail will need to extend further than if the material is lightweight.

2. Work out how much the track will reach beyond the window frame. Use a ruler to extend the top line of the recess by this amount with a pencil either side. You can rub the line out later.

3. Measure 25mm in from the end of the line and 50mm up, and then repeat for the other side. These will be the fixing positions for the end brackets.

4. Mark areas to attach the remaining fixing positions at equal intervals, ensuring that they are all 50mm up from the window frame.

5. Check at each fixing position that there are no hidden pipes or cables. If all is clear, drill the fixing holes and insert wall plugs of the correct size for your screws.

6. Screw the mounting clips into position, following the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring the bracket latches are facing forwards.

7. Place the track into the slot in one of the end brackets. Push the bracket latch until you hear a click. Clip the remaining track into place.
