Bleeding radiators
Bleeding radiators releases trapped air from your central heating therefore allowing better and more efficient radiation of heat through out your home. You should try to make this a yearly job to keep your heaters running as efficiently as possible
Tools and Materials
Radiator bleed key or flat head screw driver, old cloth.
N.B: Bleeding radiators in a sealed system will reduce the overall pressure of the entire system. Due to this you will need to top up the system following bleeding the radiators from the main cold water feed. To do this consult your central heating system manual or if in any doubt call in a qualified plumber or heating engineer for more advice.
Tip: Before you start, the central heating needs to have been on for a short period of time to allow hot water in to the radiators.
- Turn off the central heating.
- Wrap an old cloth around the bleed key to catch any excess bleed water.
- Using the bleed key fit it over the bleed value in one of the top corners of the radiator. If you don't have a bleed key try using a flat head screw driver for leverage to turn the bleed value.
- Turn the key anti-clockwise through a half turn to open the value. You should hear a hissing sound of the trapped air escaping.
- If you don't hear hissing, turn the key slightly more anti-clockwise until you do. Remember don't unscrew it by more than one complete turn.
- When water starts to tickle out of the value, retightening the value immediately by turning the key clockwise.
- If your central heating system is a sealed system, check the pressure and top it up as necessary to finish.
