Choosing rose varieties
Dutch painters liked to use a very full pink rose in their floral paintings. This rose was nicknamed The Cabbage Rose but its correct name is rosa centifolia.
What is a Damask rose?
Most Damask roses have tall weak arching stems and dull foliage and the flowers bloom in clusters and have weak stalks which tend to droop. This rose blooms in mid summer and is admired because of their beautiful shape and strong perfume.
What is a Gallica rose?
Another of the oldest roses which also goes by the name of The French Rose or rose of Provins. These roses are usually compact with rough leaves , semi-double or double flowers and are practically thornless. They flower in midsummer and do not complain about poorer soils.
What is a Centifolia rose?
Another name for a Centifolia is Cabbage Rose because of their blooms many petals that are shaped like small cabbages. These roses are not robust and need careful attention to nutrients and a spraying program. They are very fragrant but the stems are lax and the weight of the large flowers will soon weigh the canes down and so should be supported.
What is an Alba rose?
An Alba rose is one of the oldest of roses. It has grey-green leaves that are soft and droop. It is a vigorous rose and resists pests and diseases the best of all the old roses. The flowers appear in a single flush and are usually pink or white. This rose group also withstands planting in the semi shade and colder sites better than others.
What is a Moss rose?
A Moss rose is a Centifolia that sported many years ago to the same type but one with a green or brown 'moss like' sticky growth around the sepals and flower stalks. They bloom in midsummer and have a lovely sweet fragrance. They are the same type bush as the Centifolias.
What is a Bourbon rose?
A Bourbon is a cross between an Autumn Damask and a China rose. The flowers are large, globular, many- petalled and highly fragrant. They bloom in June and again in late summer. As they are very prone to blackspot, spraying is necessary.
What is a China rose?
Introduction of roses from China started the continual flowering of modern roses. These Chinas are slender, open shrubs that bear large clusters of small flowers throughout the summer months. They do need a sunny and protected site to grow well in.
