Can you plant peonies in a container?

by Fran Sorin

question
Can you plant peonies in a container? I bought a plant last night with two or three good-size buds on it, and I was hoping to plant it in a bigger terracotta pot. If I do plant it in the ground, should I use fertilizer? If so, what kind? --iVillager xavier.stone

answer
You might be able to get away with planting a peony in a container for a year or so, but it really does best in the mixed border with other shrubs and plants.

It should be grown in deep, fertile, humus-rich but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. That means that you should get a bag of humus and peat moss and mix it into already existing soil. I would add some granular fertilizer such as Osmocote to enrich the soil as well.
