Getting rid of weeds - organically

question
I have Bermuda grass with several weeds that start growing in spring and die as the weather gets warmer. They come up every year. A commercial weedkiller didn't work, and today I sprayed a few with Roundup to see if that helped. Any suggestions? --iVillager becky009

answer
You have annual weeds. I strongly recommend that you not use herbicides such as Spectracide or Roundup unless absolutely necessary. You are surrounding yourself with unnecessary toxins by doing that.

When you get this type of weed, the problem is usually in your soil structure. I recommend you let everything go until the autumn brings cooler weather. Then lay down some good crumbly compost on top of your grass and rake it in. Believe it or not, this will help to prevent weeds. Also, if you need to seed certain areas of your lawn, that would be the time to do it.

Meanwhile, when cutting your grass now, make sure your lawn mower has sharp blades and keep the grass height at four inches. Leave the mowed grass on top of the lawn to act as mulch. Water your lawn in the morning for longer periods without overwatering, and fertilise two times this year with an organic fertiliser, preferably once in the spring and once in the autumn.
