For a Girl

Next Row. Rib 2, cast off 2 sts, (rib 10 [9:11:11], cast off 2 sts) 3 [4:4:5] times, rib 1 [2: 2:2].
Next Row. Rib 2 [3:3:3], cast on 2 sts, (rib 11 [10:12:12], cast on 2 sts) 3 [4:4:5] times, rib 2.
Work 4 rows more in 1x1 rib. Cast off loosely in rib.

For a Boy

Work 6 rows more in 1x1 rib. Cast off loosely in rib.

Left front border

With rs facing, using 3¼mm needles and C, pick up and knit 36 [46:52:66] sts evenly along front edge and 9 [9:11:11] sts evenly along rib.
45 [55:63:77] sts.
Starting with 2nd row of 1x1 rib work 4 rows.

For a Boy

Next Row. Rib 2 [3:3:3], cast off 2 sts, (rib 10 [9:11:11], cast off 2 sts) 3 [4:4:5] times, rib 1.
Next Row. Rib 2, cast on 2 sts, (rib 11 [10:12:12], cast on 2 sts) 3 [4:4:5] times, rib 2 [3: 3:3].
Work 4 rows more in 1x1 rib.
Cast off loosely in rib.

For a Girl

Work 6 rows more in 1x1 rib.
Cast off loosely in rib.

Collar

With rs facing, using 3¼mm needles and C, starting halfway across top of right front border pick up and knit 16 [17:18:20] sts evenly along right side of neck, 11 [11:13:13] sts from top of right sleeve, 17 [19: 21:21] sts from back of neck, 11 [11:13:13] sts from top of left sleeve and 16 [17:18:20] sts evenly along left side of neck, ending halfway across top of left front border.
71 [75:83:87] sts.
Starting with 1st row of 1x1 rib work for 6 [6:7:7]cm, (2½ [2½:2¾:2¾]in), ending with a ws row.
Cast off loosely in rib.

To make up

Join side and sleeve seams, reversing sewing for turnback on sleeves. Fold cuff onto rs to form turnback. Sew on buttons. Pin out garment to the measurement given on front page. Cover with damp cloths and leave until dry. See ball band for washing and further care instructions.

Trousers

Legs (Both alike)

Using 3¼mm needles, thumb method and C, cast on 35 [39: 41:43] sts loosely.
1st Row. K1, * p1, k1, rep from * to end.
2nd Row. * P1, k1, rep from * to last st, p1.
These 2 rows will now be referred to as 1x1 rib.
Work in 1x1 rib for 5 [5: 6:6]cm, (2 [2:2½:2½]in), ending with a ws row.
Next Row. Rib 5 [4:3:4], pick up loop between last and next st and work into the back of this loop (this will now be referred to as m1), (rib 5 [6: 7:7], m1) 5 times, rib 5 [5: 3:4]. 41 [45:47:49] sts.
Change to 4mm needles and using M (throughout) proceed as follows:-
1st Row. Knit.
2nd Row. Purl.
These 2 rows will now be referred to as st-st (stocking stitch).
Working in st-st (throughout) inc 1 st at each end of 5th and every foll 2nd row to 73 [81: 87:93] sts.
Cont without shaping until leg measures 22 [23:26:27]cm, (8¾ [9:10¼:10¾]in), or length required, ending with a ws row.
