Laundry and my washing machine!

question

Hi Janey!

Your book inspired a friend of mine to change her deodorant and make her own skin-care products amongst many other things. I use soapnuts [a nut that grows on trees with a shell that contains a substance that acts like soap when it comes in contact with water] for washing all my coloured items, although I didn't find they were cleaning enough for my whites, so am still using Ecover for those.

Do you have any ideas of anything I could add to my soapnuts to get a better result on a white wash? I do occasionally find odd brown marks on the clothes in my coloured wash too and can't understand why, as it's not on the cotton bag which contain the soapnuts. Any ideas?

Also, my washing machine seems to be looking rather limescaley. I live in a hard water area, so I guess that's not helping. Do you know of any 'green' ways of getting rid of the limescale and making it look pristineagain?

answer

How odd - how many times are you using your soapnuts? I use Ecover stain remover for any marks or stains. Have you tried putting some bicarbonate in the dispenser too? For my whites, I use white vinegar and, if all goes pear-shaped, Ecover bleach. Another way to whiten clothes is to hang them out to dry in the sun and squeeze a bit of lemon juice on them.
