Six ways to update a living room
My living room furniture, which consists of a sectional sofa and rocking chair, are blue, mauve and off-white. It was pretty ten years ago, but desperately needs updating! I can't afford to replace or re-upholster the furniture. What other colours or accessories can I add to give an updated look?

Once the couch is covered, use large scale cushions in ivory and taupe (the chosen colour of the slipcovers). You can vary the patterns and textures but stick with the right colours.
If the rocking chair is more upholstery than wood frame, try to slipcover it as well to match the sofa. If the rocker is primarily a wood frame, then just use a medium-sized cushion in taupe or ivory to lean against its back.
If you do not want to spend money on slipcovers, then just add the cushions and a large ivory throw over the back of the couch. The fresh cushions and the solid, neutral coloured throw will give it a new look.
As you want to play down the blue and mauve, remove any of these coloured accents from the room (ie cushions, vases, picture frames, artwork, etc). If the carpeting is in the blue or mauve, place a large area rug over the existing carpeting primarily in the taupe and ivory.
If the room has hardwood floors, we still recommend using a large area rug with the taupe and ivory palette to help solidify moving away from the blue and mauve.
