6 steps to a cosy faux fireplace

by Megan McKissick

question
I would like to add some romance to my bedroom by creating a fireplace effect with candles. Any ideas?

answer
Our project is a little involved but we think you will be very happy with the finished product.

Purchase a fireplace mantel at a flea market. If the finish is battered, then simply paint it!

After you attach it to the wall, paint the `inside (the opening of the facade) black. Buy some 30 cm square tiles (they're easier to work with). Align the tiles, side by side, so that they run the approximate width of the fireplace. You will want to have at least two rows (depth) of these tiles.

After the tiles are aligned, measure the area. With a permanent marker, draw the measurements on to a piece of relatively stiff carpet underlay. Cut along the marked lines to create a piece of underlay which equals the tiled area.

Stick the tiles to the underlay with hot glue. This will provide you with a 'fire hazard-free' surface while imitating a real fireplace.

Buy candlesticks/holders in different heights but with the same coloured finish. There are many places where you can find them inexpensively. Or just use the candles you already have to start. We recommend using all white candles (tapered or pillared) to create a more sophisticated look. Enjoy!
