New Figures Position iVillage UK as a Market Leader

Leading website for women announces first ABC ELECTRONIC Audit Figures

LONDON - 8, March 2002 - iVillage UK (www.ivillage.co.uk), the 24 hour online resource and community for women, celebrated today as its first ABC ELECTRONIC audit figures (January 2002) confirmed its position as a leading website for women in the UK.

The first ABC ELECTRONIC figures reveal that for the month ended January 31st 2002, iVillage UK had 541,596 Unique Users and 6,930,538 Page Impressions. These figures are higher than the most recently published audited figures for other market players, including handbag.com and femail.co.uk and, on this basis, places iVillage in a market leading position in just over one year since its launch.

Overseeing the success to date and future strategy of the media property CEO Phil Rooke commented on the figures, "Our audience has now grown fivefold since December 2000. www.iVillage.co.uk is an internet success story and the fact that we are firmly backed by two industry giants, iVillage Inc and Tesco, means that we have many more exciting developments planned for 2002.

The market is currently an open one and there are only a few sites, attracting and sustaining the attention and activity of women. I'm glad to say that iVillage UK is leading the field."

iVillage UK's success is attributed to what differentiates it from other women's propositions. Specifically:

  • Community: With over 74 message boards ranging from breast cancer support, recipe ideas, birth stories and coping with abuse, the website has an extremely effective community model.

  • Online information resource: The site has over 3,000 articles covering all aspects of life, as well as on-call experts and interactive tools. Content is user driven and delivered in response to issues raised by the iVillage UK community, ensuring the site continues to grow and is dynamic.

  • Campaigns: By harnessing and supporting campaigns that affect the UK's female population such as Domestic Abuse, Get Out of Debt, Breast Cancer Support and Shape Up Challenge, the site provides a much needed voice for women.
As a media business, money is made through advertising, sponsorship and some paid-for services. Recent deals have included exclusive sponsorship from Fordjourney for the Motoring Channel and from Kelloggs.

Success lies in the fact that, with a female audience of 89%, advertisers realise iVillage UK is a perfect platform to target women, particularly when statistics reveal that women are responsible for 90%* of household purchasing decisions.

Richard Foan, MD, ABC ELECTRONIC comments: "It is clear that as more and more new media properties demonstrate their success using industry agreed standards, advertisers are investing in those new media. iVillage UK is the latest to make the most of this opportunity and should be applauded for doing so".

iVillage UK is a joint venture between iVillage Inc in the US and Tesco, Britain's leading retailer. This 50/50 joint venture over sees Tesco committed to investing money, online and offline promotions and expert knowledge of some the strongest and most loyal customer relationships in the UK. Both parties contribute reciprocal marketing and support.
