Jason Donovan interview

Jason DonovaniVillage caught up with Jason Donovan to discuss family life, his new album, marriage, drugs and whether he's going to be the second blonde Bond, but we definitely didn't mention Kylie...

At the height of his fame in the '80s and early '90s Jason Donovan played sell-out concerts to screaming fans, he sold millions of records world-wide, was a successful actor on screen and stage and his life looked set for superstardom, but then it all went wrong.

After successfully suing The Face over an article suggesting he was gay, his popularity waned. He had split from Kylie Minogue and had begun taking cocaine, an addiction that would influence his life and career for years to come.

For over a decade Donovan was barely in the public's consciousness, he played successful roles on stage, but off stage his life was played out without much fanfare and publicity.

Jason Donovan is now 40 and in the last few years he's got his life back on track. These days he's a family man, he has two children with his stage manager wife (they recently got married in Bali), he's off drugs and, after I'm a Celebrity... and Echo Beach, he's back in our consciousness. He's even returned to the recording studio after a 15-year break and has released an album called Let It Be Me.

When I meet Jason Donovan he tells me he's been in interviews most of the day. 'Have you been asked the same questions all morning?' I ask. 'I've been asked the same questions all my life.'

As we head to the room where we'll be doing the interview, he chats away amiably, opening doors for me on the way and when we reach the room, he gives it a quick tidy up (there are empty drinks cans all over the table) and reorganises his albums and press releases - I imagine 20-year-old superstar Jason wouldn't have bothered with this, but family man Jason is obviously used to tidying up other peoples' mess.

Jason Donovan: 'I'm pretty hands-on at home', he tells me. 'I love taking my kids to school in the morning. It's nice to watch your children grow up, and I enjoy being involved in their lives. I mean, what is there not to like about having kids? I don't see any negatives at all. It's ironic that in life you could actually question if it was the right thing to do. You think it's going to slow you down and actually it does the opposite, you think it's going to tie you down, you think it's going to do a lot of things.'
