Knit a lacy summer scarf
Scarves aren't just for winter. This simple and thrifty pattern uses leftover yarn and the result is a delicate, lace-like scarf which is light enough for summer evenings and easy to fit in a bag... if the weather decides to be nice!
You will need
- 4ply yarn from your stash
- A pair of 4mm needles
Measurements
Scarf with border 56x5½in (140x14cm)
Abbreviations
K knit
P purl
st(s) stitch(es)
k2tog knit 2 sts together
p2tog purl 2 sts together
sl 1 slip 1 st
psso pass the slipped st over
yf bring yarn to front
yrn wrap yarn round needle
Tension
28 sts and 21 rows to measure 4x4in (10x10cm) over pattern using 4mm needles.
To knit the scarf...
Cast on 30 sts.
Work 2 rows st st.
Work in lace patt as follows:
Row 1: K1 (K2, k2tog, yf, K3) 4 times, K1.
Row 2: K1, (P1, sl 1, P1, psso, yrn, P1, yrn, p2tog, P1) 4 times, K1.
Row 3: K1, (k2tog, yf, K3, yf, sl 1, k1, psso) 4 times, K1.
Rows 4: & 8 K1, P28, K1.
Row 5: K1, (yf, sl 1, k1, psso, K5) 4 times, K1.
Row 6: K1, (yrn, p2tog, P2, sl 1, P1, psso, yrn, P1) 4 times, K1.
Row 7: K1, (K2, yf, sl 1, k1, psso, k2tog, yf, K1) 4 times, K1.
Rep rows 1-8 a further 25 times.
Work 2 rows st st.
Cast off.
For the frill...
Make one at each end.
Pick up 30 sts all along cast on or cast off edge.
Row 1: (K1, yf) to last st, K1. [59 sts]
Work 3 rows st st.
Next row: K1, (yf, K3) to last st, yf, K1. [79 sts]
Work 3 rows st st.
Next row: K2, (yf, K5) to last st, yf, K2.
Work 3 rows st st.
Cast off.
