You will need

1 pair of 4mm (UK8 - USA6) Knitting Needles (or the size required to give the correct tension).
 

Tension

Please take a little time now to knit a stocking stitch tension square. Using 4mm needles cast on 22 stitches and work 28 rows in stocking stitch (1 row knit, 1 row purl).

Abbreviations

cm centimetres, dk double knitting, g grammes, in inch(es), k knit, mm millimetres, 0 no rows, p purl, st(s) stitch(es), tog together.
K2tog insert the right hand needle through the 2nd and 1st stitches on the left hand needle and knit them together to form a single stitch.
P2tog insert the right hand needle purlways through the 1st and 2nd stitches on the left hand needle and purl them together to form a single stitch.
Wrap 1 slip next stitch onto right hand needle and take yarn to opposite side of work between needles, slip same stitch back onto left hand needle. Circle the size you wish to make

Back

Cast on 55 [61:67:73:77] sts.
1st Row. (this will be the right side of the work -rs) Knit.
2nd Row. Purl.
Continue in stocking stitch for the remainder of the back as follows:-
Work 9 [9:9:11:15] rows increasing 1 st at each end of 1st [1st:1st:3rd:3rd] and every following 4th [4th:4th:4th:6th] row. You will now have 61 [67:73:79:83] sts on the needle. Work 3 rows straight.
The back should now measure 28 [31:33:36:38]cm, (11 [12:13:14:15]in), across at this point. **
