She loves shopping - clothes, shoes, handbags... even the indent you get on your hand from carrying too many hangers to the changing room. And while she knows her PPQ from her Primark, that doesn't mean she can afford it. This is TV presenter Cat Cubie's irreverent and entertaining insight to the world of fashion...

Lace me up, Scotty!

I know what you're thinking, 'Lace isn't new, love, it's been around forever... even my Granny likes lace'. That's the thing with trends though, it's not the content that's new it's what you do with it that counts.

Lace has, indeed, been kicking around for a while, making a show of itself in short tight dresses. Then last year, the look was more gothic inspired and, if I'm honest, had a tendency to look a bit witchy.

cc231110b.jpgThis winter the trick to having amazing lace is to be romantic but not overly girly, sensual but don't try to attract the curb crawlers. This can be difficult with the whole 'underwear as outerwear' look but the trick is to keep the cut a little looser or the hemline a little longer.

This year, the trend is also less about stretch lace and more about the vintage look. So the key to finding the right pieces is to look for a sturdier material, although it might feel a little rough, it's classier than it's thinner, stretchier sister. I think lace is at it's sweetest when it's monochromatic, with black being the easiest to wear.

Check out the vintage lace cuffs (pictured above) at Nonesuchthings.com for a sweet and subtle twist on the look. The cute bracelets are made of a strip of fabric encased within acrylic, and are suitable for day or night wear, available in white or black. Ideal!

Like a lot of the trends this A/W the feeling is grown-up, sophisticated and feminine but with just a touch of naughtiness.

The special thing about lace is that despite it being a fancy fabric, there are no rules about how you wear it. It works equally well for a posh frock as it does for something a little more urban and street. Regardless of your style, I think it's possible to make lace work for you.

Right now I have got myself a bit of a shirt addiction and in fact shirts in sheer fabrics are having a bit of a moment. So... sheer, lace shirt - two trends nailed!

In the photo you can see me modelling the look at the Jackass 3D premiere.

And there you have it. Lace: not just for tablecloths.
