Lady Muck samples a new style of manicure
False lashes, lip transfers, nail stickers…give me something adhesive and I’ll happily stick it on me (you may have noticed), however this week there’s been a switch and I’ve tried something that I can’t just peel off when the mood takes me. That’s right Muckettes, I’ve been gellified!
This is not some horrific face mask or cellulite treatment, gel manicures are the new Shellac (long lasting mani) and while the Shellac may only have hit the mainstream a few months ago, it’s set to take second place to the new improved version.
Still a hybrid between gel and polish, the difference is that it uses led lights rather than UV to set or ‘cure’ the gel. Everything else seems pretty much the same although testers have claimed that the results last even longer than those of a Shellac (up to a month in some cases)!
I was treated to the Jessica version – GELeration – and what followed wasn’t dissimilar to a regular manicure; file, shape, buff, tidy cuticles etc, it’s just that in between coats – base, polish (two layers) and then topcoat you have to pop your nails under the led lights. The real beauty of it is that the polish isn’t hard like false gel nails and you can’t even feel it once it’s on – it’s as flexible and wearable as your everyday polish.
For me though, the most magical thing about the process is the zero drying time. I repeat – ZERO drying time. As soon as the mani is finished you’re good to go. Your nails won’t even feel tacky so you can rummage around at the bottom of your bag as much as you like because these babies aren’t going to chip, smudge or break. The super shiny colour also lasts up to three weeks so if like me you have your GELeration before Santa comes, you’ll still have amazing-looking nails well into the New Year.
I also found there to be a wider selection of colours compared to the CND Shellac which is limited to the basics – nudes, pinks and reds, although I did opt for a festive feel this time round and plumped for a Christmas cranberry colour with a flicker of shimmer when it catches the light.
Oh and did I mention that you can paint OVER the gel manicure with your normal polish and then when it’s removed with the regular Jessica nail varnish remover it won’t affect a thing. You simply have to use a darker shade than your gel manicure colour and you would never know you’d painted over the top because underneath your nails will stay be polished and perfect – need I say more!?
