Lady Muck's essential guide to winter beauty
Boy oh boy is it nippy outside. A few more days of this frosty climate and I might have to barricade myself indoors until May. Not only is it leaving me dressing a little like a down and out – slobby jumpers, big boots and overlapping socks – it’s affecting my skin a lot.
By now one should be well equipped for such cold snaps but this year’s mild winter solstice has left even the most well-seasoned Brits unprepared for the current onslaught of snow and icy winds. Thankfully there are some products out there that get to work immediately, so if you do sense a spell of dehydrated, dry skin creeping up on you, you can actually put a stop to it pretty darn sharpish.
Your first must-have should be Eucerin’s Aquaphor Soothing Skin Balm. Similar to Elizabeth Arden’s infamous Eight Hour Cream, this glides onto the skin coating dry patches like a plaster and stopping any essential moisture getting out. Suitable even on cracked skin, smooth it on everywhere from your face and lips to pesky dry patches that pop up on your legs. It really is a wonder product, costs an affordable £8.50 and is used by the one and only Beyonce. Praise indeed.
Next up, you want to think about protecting your pout because chapped lips aren’t going to work with the new poppy coloured lipsticks you need to be slicking on for spring. In emergencies I turn to Lanolips and although it isn’t the latest product they’ve brought out, I’m rather partial to the Lemonaid Lip Aid, £9.18 that acts as an exfoliator and hydrator in one. Plus it adds a very subtle sparkle to your lips which makes wearing no lipstick slightly more bearable.
Lastly you want to think about maintaining your mitts. There’s no point keeping them well manicured if the rest of your fingers look shrivelled and uncared for. With a hand cream in arms reach at all times (at every sink, on my desk, in my handbag, by my bed etc) it’s tricky for me to pick out a favourite, although I am enjoying L’Occitane’s new Cherry Princess Hand Cream, £7.50 at the moment that does at least smell of spring, even though we’re experiencing the darkest depths of winter right now. My only bugbear is that like so many hand creams it doesn’t contain an SPF but if you do just want one to slap on pre-gloves, this sweet scented shea butter lotion will do the job just fine. Now take heed and wrap up warm!
