Listening Skills: Pattern sounds

Create fun rhythms for kids to clap along with and you'll improve their pattern recognition skills. Pattern recognition skills are necessary for an understanding of early maths and reading concepts.

What to do:

Clap your hands in a pattern and encourage your child to repeat the pattern. Try the pattern of two short claps, one clap, two short claps, one clap. After your child repeats it several times, make a more difficult pattern or include finger snaps if your child can do them. Turn on some of your children's favourite music and ask them to repeat the clap pattern again. Give them a chance to create a pattern for you to learn and repeat.
