Making kids fuss-free foodies
Most parents will be familiar with the 'tantrum at teatime' routine. We caught up with best-selling author and nutrition expert Annabel Karmel to get her top tips on how to get kids more interested in eating healthily.
Whether it's encouraging kids to eat foods they wouldn't normally be interested in or helping create a relaxed environment at mealtimes, Annabel Karmel has a wealth of knowledge and experience.

What do you hope to achieve with your latest book?
Annabel Karmel: If there's one food that you're almost guaranteed to get a fussy child to eat, it is pasta. There are things they won't normally eat, like spinach that you can work into a spinach lasagne. Or you could add some salmon or prawns, or Bolognese with a twist - it's such a flexible food.
Getting young children comfortable with eating a wide variety of foods is often a struggle. What is the key to breaking down the barriers and helping kids to eat healthily?
Annabel Karmel: It's a good question because kids often tend to like three or four things and the mother gets so frustrated she ends up just giving them the same three or four things for an easy life. I know it's tempting but it just encourages extreme fussiness.
Don't give in to the temptation but also, don't react, don't make a fuss. If they don't eat it, they go hungry and a hungry child is a less fussy child. You could also try a star system - if they try something new they get a star, when they get a certain number of stars they can stay up and watch a film or football match on TV.
It's about accentuating the positives. And the less attention you give them when they're naughty, the more likely it is they'll come round to your way.
There are also many things that kids like that parents automatically think are too sophisticated for them, like mild curries, chicken satay or stir fries.
Timing is also important. Kids are often hungry when they come back from school. It's an ideal time to give them something nutritional. Unfortunately, a lot of us tend to give them biscuits or a packet of crisps because it's easy. Maybe make a pasta salad in the morning to keep in the fridge or some cut up fruit in a bowl.
Are kids naturally drawn to sweet foods and if so, how do you encourage the same level of curiosity when it comes to savoury food?
Annabel Karmel: Children are conditioned to like sweet food because breast milk is sweet. They grow up with a sweet tooth. You can start by introducing purees that combine something like spinach with something sweet like sweet potato, so you're making a gradual transition.
I also think you have a window of opportunity at 6 - 12 months. They eat well in their first year so it's important to get as many flavours in as you can.
Often their appetites wane slightly after that and they become more fussy. Mothers often say 'what am I doing wrong?' It's not that they're doing anything wrong it's just the child's rate of growth has slowed down and they have many more things occupying their thoughts.
Finger food is good and it's often good to combine something new with something they already like such as apple and chicken. Also, if you're making a fish pie for the family it's often worth putting the child's portion in an individual ramekin rather than dollop it straight on the plate - it looks far more attractive to the child.
