Maths Skills: Fraction snap

This game puts a new educational twist on tiddlywinks. Children will develop hand-eye co-ordination skills and learn to recognise and add fractions by competing with their friends.

What this activity will develop:

What you'll need: CardboardCraft knifePolystyrene cupsPeel-off dotsFine-tipped markerMasking tapeTiddlywinks or plastic tokens

What to do:

Trace around the top of a polystyrene cup to make circles on the poster board. Cut out the circles, cutting slightly inside the traced lines.

Put the cups in the holes in the cardboard.

Write fractions on the peel-off dots, making one for each cup.

Peel off the dots, and stick one above each cup.

Cut a strip of cardboard longer than the game board. Fold the strip so that it will support the board and then tape the ends of the strip to the back of the board at the top and bottom.

How to play:

Each player uses one tiddlywink to snap two other tiddlywinks into cups. The player then adds the fraction values for the cups where the tiddlywinks have landed.

The first player whose scores add up to a whole number wins.
