Maths Skills Remainders to Home

This board game requires children to do simple division problems correctly in order to move through the game. As the players develop their skills, they can make the game more challenging by increasing the difficulty of the problems.

What you'll need: Large-square graph paperScissorsMarker penIndex cardsA4 cardboard folderButtons or counters

What to do:

Cut the graph paper so that it has 25 squares. Mark each corner square with an H. Mark the centre square with an X.

On the cards, print division problems that have remainders of 1, 2 or 3. Next to each problem, draw an arrow pointing right, left, up or down. Make at least 20 cards, making the same number of cards for each arrow direction. For example: 15 divided by 2, 11 divided by 3, 13 divided by 3, 27 divided by 5, 39 divided by 6, 11 divided by 4, 15 divided by 4, 7 divided by 2, 52 divided by 7

Print the directions on the front of the folder. Print the problems with their answers inside the folder.

Place the game board, cards, and buttons or counters in the folder pockets.

Rules of play:

Three people may play. One player checks the answers in the folder.

Players place their game pieces in the centre square marked X. Shuffle the cards, and place the deck face down.

The first player draws a card and works out the problem. If the answer is correct, the player may move the same number of squares as the remainder in the direction shown on the card.

If the answer is incorrect, the player remains on the same square. The next player may choose to work that problem or draw a new card. If the player's answer was correct, the next player draws a new card.

The first player to reach one of the H (home) squares is the winner.
