Memory-jogging list for each trimester
No comments
There's so much information to take on board after your pregnancy is confirmed, but there are some key things to remember for each trimester. Keep this checklist somewhere handy - maybe with your hospital notes - and you'll be well prepared.
First trimester (weeks 1-12)
Start taking folic acid
If you weren't already taking a daily folic acid supplement pre-conception, now's the time to start, as you can't get enough of this important vitamin (also known as vitamin B9) from your daily diet.
Folic acid helps to protect your baby from developing spinal cord problems, such as spina bifida, as well as certain other birth defects. You can buy folic acid from pharmacies and supermarkets. The dose is 400mcg per day, which is taken in a one-a-day tablet.
for your booking appointment
Your first antenatal appointment, also known as your booking appointment, will usually happen between weeks 10-12 and will be with a midwife, who will carry out some blood tests, check your urine and blood pressure and take a full medical history. It's a great opportunity to ask about anything you're unsure of, so go along with a list of questions.
Think about your birth plan
You may or may not already have a clear idea of how you'd like your birth to. There are lots of things to consider, from your options for pain relief to whether or not you want a water birth or other active delivery, who you want in the room with you and who will cut the cord. There's loads of time for you to make changes as your pregnancy progresses, but it's a good time to get an outline down on paper.
