These spicy minced beef patties are a traditional Jamaican party favourite
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 500g beef mince
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 clove garlic, crushed
- 3 ripe tomatoes, chopped
- 1 tbsp hot curry powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tbsp tomato purée
- ¼ tsp tabasco (or more to taste)
- 1 x 500g pack fresh shortcrust pastry
- beaten egg or milk to glaze

- Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Brown the mince thoroughly, using a wooden spoon to break it down.
- Add the rest of the ingredients for the filling to the pan and stir-fry over a high heat for minutes until the mixture is fairly dry. Leave to cool while you roll out the pastry.
- Preheat the oven to //gas mark On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pastry thinly and stamp out as many cm rounds as possible, re-rolling the pastry as necessary. Brush the outside edge of each with water then fill them generously (using about # tbsp mixture). Fold in half and seal well, pressing the edges with a fork. Prick the top of each.
- Arrange on baking trays, brush with beaten egg or milk, and cook towards the top of the oven for minutes or until golden brown. Best served warm.
