Motor Skills: Ceiling Tile Maze

You may want to carve the maze path for your child, or at least closely supervise his or her use of the craft knife. This game will develop sensory and co-ordination skills, and makes a great birthday party activity.

What this activity will develop:
Motor and art skills

What you'll need:Ceiling tile without holesPencilCraft knifeScrewdriver or chiselPermanent markerBlindfoldWatch or clock with second hand

What to do:

Draw a maze path on the ceiling tile with the pencil. Include false turns and dead ends.

Use the knife to cut both sides of the path. Then use the screwdriver or chisel to dig out a groove along the path.

Use the marker to trace the correct path through the maze. Print START at the beginning and FINISH at the end.

How to use:

Without showing the maze, challenge someone to find the correct path to the finish.

Have the person put on a blindfold. Then put the person's finger on the path at the starting point.

Tell the person to trace the correct path to the finish point.

Use a watch to time the person from start to finish.

Have the person try two more times. Does the length of time it takes get shorter?

Challenge others to follow the maze. Compare the results to see who is fastest.
