The Theory Test

The Theory Test comprises 35 questions with 40 minutes to answer them all. A score of 30 or above is a pass. Anything below 30 is a fail

The trick to passing The Theory Test is preparation and practice. It's not rocket science. The Theory Tests are designed to test your knowledge, not to trick you and many answers are based on common sense as much as a photographic memory.

There are many great ways to prepare. If you have a small budget, then buy the Highway Code. This book contains almost everything you need to know, and it provides a Theory section. There are many other books which provide mock tests too, including The Official Theory Test for Cars and Motorcycles published by The Driving Standards Agency.

We also recommend trying mock tests. Even though they may be worded differently, many questions found on practice tests are very similar to those found on real tests.

If your budget is slightly bigger, many driving schools offer Theory courses for less money than Practical training. These classes may take place in a classroom setting or in a car.

Once you start your actual driving lessons, you'll find Theory much easier to learn because you're actually applying the knowledge. Many driving instructors also ask Theory questions during driving lessons, but they are not obligated to help you with Theory training.

If your local driving school cannot help with Theory, try a school or college which provides training courses. Many of these classes are run by qualified driving instructors.

Overall, the most important preparation you can do is to take as many mock tests as possible. Not only will this familiarise you with the style and format of the Theory questions, but it will give you much more confidence.
