Beyond the test

Once you've passed your test, don't get too carried away and forget all you've learned. It's vital that you keep your standards high, for your own safety and others

Drivers aged 17-25 represent 16 per cent of full licence holders, but they're involved in 28 per cent of crashes and account for 52 per cent of deaths

Many people who've just passed their test prefer to take a relative or a friend with them on their first few car trips. They provide good moral support and help decrease any driver nerves.

Of course, eventually you'll have to drive alone. Obviously it's best to choose short, simple trips at first, like going back and forth from work on familiar roads.

When you become more comfortable as a driver, you will want to move out into new territory and it will help if you make make a few sensible provisions such as having a decent atlas with you, plus a fully charged mobile phone and maybe even a drink, a snack and a coat in case the journey takes longer than you think and you end up stuck somewhere for whatever reason.

Soon you'll become completely comfortable with driving, and you'll enjoy a new sense of freedom - and you'll also become familiar with the delights of paying for your own petrol and giving free lifts to all your friends who aren't as well organised as you!
