Frequently asked questions
What safeguards are built into the site?
The one thing that goes through everyone's minds when you mention children on the Internet is the risk of paedophiles.
'There are very few predatory paedophiles in the UK,' stresses Chief Inspector Bonnett. 'The site has been running for a long time in America. They've tracked this very carefully. There have been no cases of a child featured on the site being harmed because somebody identified them from the site.'
There are also safeguards in place with the UK site to make sure that cannot happen. Likewise, no child suspected of fleeing their home because of abuse is featured on the website.
What should I do if I think I've spotted a missing child?
There are details on the posters and on site of who to call if you think you may have spotted a missing child. The freephone number is 0808 100 8777. If you are not sure, you should contact your local force and explain the circumstances.
'An important point to make is that if you think you recognise a child, you should not approach them. That could scare them off and make them run away,' stresses Chief Insp Bonnett. 'Let the police and the caring agencies act on the information. Don't worry about wasting police time.'
What happens when a child is recovered?
When a child is recovered, there is a very specific recovery program. 'We don't just say, "There you are" and give the child back to the parents,' says Chief Insp Bonnett. 'We monitor the children's progress through social services.'
How can I help?
If you want to get involved, you can visit the police website and download posters of children thought to be in your area.
'The majority of visits to the website at present are from the general public,' says Chief Insp Bonnett. 'People download the posters to put them in their local village shop or their own shop. We'd like to encourage people to put the posters up. The whole object of the site is to get the images of children widely available. There is no limit to who can print them off.'
It could change a child's life for the better.
