'The only way out is death'
PC Karl Bluestone had promised to uphold the law and to protect the innocent. Yet he failed to keep that pledge when it came to his own family. Behind closed doors, he used his fists to communicate. His wife Jill and their four children lived in terror. And when she finally worked up enough courage to leave him, he killed her.
This was a man who had seemingly dedicated his life to helping others; an upstanding member of the local community.
A recent inquest into the killings revealed the true extent of the horror. Bluestone was a violent man who was convinced his wife was having an extra-marital affair. He grew possessive and obsessed, taping her telephone calls and striking out with his fists.
Jill had finally had enough. During the last fight, she told him she was taking the children and leaving. That catapulted Bluestone over the edge. He bludgeoned his wife and two sons to death and attempted to murder terrified six-year-old daughter Jessica and son Jack, seven.
It is horrific stories like these, and other all-too familiar tales of brutality in the home, that have inspired our new iVillage campaign Stop Domestic Abuse. Simply put, weve made domestic violence our business. Thats a phrase you will see again as you read our features on the issue thats because we believe in it.
It is time to bring the subject of domestic violence out from behind closed doors. For too many of us, it is a dirty subject, a taboo, something kept hidden. Raising awareness of the issue and helping to change attitudes is the only way to tackle it. It is an issue we cannot afford to ignore.
